From preparing for childbirth to coping with Alzheimer’s, and from weight management to smoking cessation, MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center is your community health partner.

Lupus Support Group

This group is for those who have Lupus, for those waiting for a diagnosis of lupus, and for family members and friends who wish to learn more in order to help a loved one with Lupus. This is a place where members can find others for support and friendship. The group is open to persons age 18 and over. The group is facilitated by a license social worker.

Your guide will escort you and your guests to view Labor & Delivery, the three nurseries- Admission Nursery, Regular Newborn Nursery, and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, as well as the Mother-Baby Coupling Units. As your guide provides you with information about the admission process, visiting hours, rooming-in, and available services, please feel free to ask any questions you and your family may have.

The tours are held the second and fourth Thursdays of every month at 6:15 P.M. and 7:15 P.M. We also hold a tour one Saturday a month at 4 P.M. The tours are free.

Weekly Prenatal Childbirth - Four-Part Class

Through film, lecture, question & answer, and hands-on opportunities, our classes provide the expectant mother and her partner important information on the labor and birth process. Topics include basic anatomy and physiology, the labor process, vaginal delivery, cesarean section, and birth interventions such as induction of labor, vacuum assisted delivery, and episiotomy. We review specific steps to take if your water breaks, what to do when you start to contract, and when to call your doctor.

You and your partner will have opportunities to practice natural comfort measures including breathing techniques, massage therapy, and use of the birthing ball as well as, discussion of pain control options such as epidural anesthesia and IV/IM medications. This class will help prepare you for a positive birth experience.

The cost is $75/couple.

Breastfeeding is Best Class

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months gives babies the best possible nutrition. Our instructor will explain breastfeeding's benefits, demonstrate various feeding positions, give tips on pumping and storing breast milk, talk about challenges you may encounter, and provide information about available community support and resources. Expectant moms and their partners are both encouraged to attend.

This class is offered one Saturday a month from 12:00pm to 4:00pm in the hospital library. The fee is $30 per couple. Please email childbirthclass@southernmarylandhospital.com or call (301) 877-5740 to register around your 24th week of pregnancy.

Through film, lecture, question & answer, and hands-on opportunities, our classes provide the expectant mother and her partner important information on the labor and birth process. Topics include basic anatomy and physiology, the labor process, vaginal delivery, cesarean section, and birth interventions such as induction of labor, vacuum assisted delivery, and episiotomy. We review specific steps to take if your water breaks, what to do when you start to contract, and when to call your doctor.

You and your partner will have opportunities to practice natural comfort measures including breathing techniques, massage therapy, and use of the birthing ball as well as, discussion of pain control options such as epidural anesthesia and IV/IM medications. This class will help prepare you for a positive birth experience.

The class is offered two ways: A one-time, all day Saturday class from 9 A.M. to 4 P.M. or a 4 day series, meeting once a week for 4 weeks from 7 P.M. to 9:15 P.M.

The cost is $75/couple.

First Year of Life

Preparing for your newborn can sometimes feel like an overwhelming task. Our class is designed to provide you with practical information to support you through your transition into parenthood. Through lecture, question and answer, and numerous hands-on opportunities, we will cover many topics such as car seat installation, infant health & CPR, preparing your home, developmental milestones, diapering, cord care, bottle feeding, and much more. We will assist you with the installation of your car seat at the end of class.

This class is offered one Saturday of every month from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm The cost is $40/couple.

Car Seat Safety Checks

Since the installation of a car seat may be more complicated than parents anticipated, allow our Certified Car Seat Technician to assist you with your infant’s seat. If we cannot schedule you within the time frame you are seeking, we will provide you with alternative options within the community.

Our car seat event is held the third Saturday of the month, March through November, from 2:30 P.M. to 4 :30 P.M. in the Colony South Hotel parking lot. Installation if free.

Diabetes Self-Management Education Program teaches individuals with diabetes how to manage their diabetes. The DSME Program hosts a free Annual Diabetes Expo every November.

Weekly Prenatal Childbirth - Four-Part Class

Date:August 21, 2013

Through film, lecture, question & answer, and hands-on opportunities, our classes provide the expectant mother and her partner important information on the labor and birth process. Topics include basic anatomy and physiology, the labor process, vaginal delivery, cesarean section, and birth interventions such as induction of labor, vacuum assisted delivery, and episiotomy. We review specific steps to take if your water breaks, what to do when you start to contract, and when to call your doctor.

You and your partner will have opportunities to practice natural comfort measures including breathing techniques, massage therapy, and use of the birthing ball as well as, discussion of pain control options such as epidural anesthesia and IV/IM medications. This class will help prepare you for a positive birth experience.

This group class meets for one hour and covers various topics such as portion control, label reading, recipe modification, and more. Learn how to achieve and maintain a healthy weight and lower risk factors that negatively impact your health.

This class meets on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month from 11am-12pm in the Governor’s Room at the Colony South Hotel.
